महिषासुरमर्दिनीस्तोत्रम् इति mahiSAsuramardinI-stotram महिष mahiSa buffalo, असुर asura demon , मर्दिनी mardinI destroying. Hymn of Praise of The Goddess who destroyed the buffalo demon Mahishasura. अहं चिन्तयामि इदं स्तोत्रम् आदिशङ्कराचार्येण अलिख्यत किन्तु निश्चयोनास्म्यहम् | I think this stotra was written by Adi Shankara,but I am not sure....

हिन्दुपुराणस्य विषये स्वपरिमितसूचनया अहं चिन्तयामि सः असुरः यः अपि महिषस्य  उपकल्पयति  | सः व्यपदिशति अकल्पकामात्मता, लुब्धता,अक्षमता राजद्रोह इत्यादिः | सः मनुष्यविशायाः  सर्वं पैशाच्यम्   सामान्यतः व्यपदिशति | देवी च महिषासुरमर्दिनी सा अस्मासु अन्तर् दिव्यशक्तिः अस्ति येन जीवितस्य सर्वे विघ्नाः नाशिताः सन्ति इति ||

श्री महिषासुरमर्दिन्या नमस्कारान् समर्पयामः सर्वे वयम् | ॐ  श्री महिषासुरमर्दिन्या नमो नमः ||

I think with my limited information on the topic of Hindu mythology. That demon who also took the form of a buffalo. He refers to uncontrolled lust desires, greed, envy and tyranny etc. He in general represents the demoniacal nature of man and the Goddess mahiSAsuramardinI she is the divine Power within all of us by which all these impediments of life are destroyed.
